Ecological Surveys
Preliminary Ecological Appraisal or Extended Phase 1 Surveys
Preliminary Ecological Appraisal is also known as Extended Phase 1 Survey and sometimes referred to as a Baseline Ecological Survey or Walkover Survey.
These surveys are useful where a proposed development may impact on existing species or habitats of ecological interest. The survey involves preparation of a Desk Study, followed by walking the site and indentifying habitat types, ecological interest and potential impacts of such a proposal. The survey also highlights any need for more specialist surveys.
Phase 1 Surveys
Phase 1 surveys provide a habitat mapping system which allows a relatively rapid survey using broad habitat types. This is often useful in identifying habitats of interest and is often followed by more detailed survey.
National Vegetation Community (NVC) Surveys
NVC survey is another mapping system which uses more detailed communities than the Phase 1, but again focusses on vegetation.
